Hexagram 09 Binding
The model of the moment: Here some element, weak in itself, draws strength from the situation to successfully restrict or move a much more formidable entity. An example could be that wherein a person's shoe laces were improperly tied so that the left foot was bound to the right. In such a situation the person would suffer difficulty in moving about, despite the fact that the laces were not in themselves a powerful force. The circumstances would be the important factor; not the laces themselves. The ancient invention of the lever too illustrates this principle; by properly positioning an otherwise inconsequential bar or pole, you can move an enormous weight. In like fashion a coworker who is essentially your equal might enjoy some authority over you due to a formality; one that assigns him control over something you need access to for your own duties. In this way he can easily restrain your efforts upon a whim, though his office holds no general precedence over your own. Such situations are often temporary. But still they may create tension and anxiety when they appear. And discourage the undertaking of ambitious tasks through the inefficiencies and frustrations implied. The course usually recommended for such times: Struggling to break free of this restraint will gain you nothing, as it is the environment which presents the true problem, and not the element upon which you have focused your query. You would be best advised, child, to set your course into an entirely new direction. Or else accept the fact that you shall be stymied by the present obstacle for quite some time to come.
Fixed (no changing lines);
This is a plateau process or event; the given model will hold true for an extended period of time. Attempts to manipulate events away from the present course could prove frustrating and fruitless, until destiny is satisfied. Consider the following as well as the above: Your way is blocked. Though the impediment is small, it is permanent in this particular case. Your only alternative to this stalemate is to rein in your desires in this area.
Changing Lines:
1
Never forsake your personal honor. This positions you well for avoiding mistakes in personal decisions. In this case you allowed your ambition to exceed your motivation or abilities. You should begin again.
2
The obstacles before you are too deeply rooted. Begin again.
3
Collapse and crisis. You have failed to perceive the strength of the obstacles before you, and advanced only into embarrassing failure. But this can be rectified.
4
Violence. You should retreat. To prevent the descent of further chaos upon you now, use sincere and honest efforts.
5
The exploitation of others will incur stiff punishment. When you are truly working for the good of all, others will join you in your efforts, allowing one and all to advance.
6
Be content with your achievements as they stand, for further progress is unattainable for now. To proceed recklessly ahead at this time would bring only disaster.
When all lines are changing;
Your influence on others is limited now. Your only options are patience and perseverance, or complete abandonment of the goals you possess in regards to this topic.
