Hexagram 49 Major Change
The model of the moment: People often dislike, or outright fear change. Historically, large changes have almost always had unforeseen results; many of which were disastrous in some way for those affected. Nevertheless, change is as essential to the world as breathing to our lives; our experience of it cannot be stopped without bringing all of existence itself to a halt. Change is not necessarily always painful or tragic in its consequences. Much of the bad ancestral memories we may carry of it stems from the physical manifestations of entropy, which dictate that a large percentage of changes be of a destructive nature. However, as human beings we are much less at the mercy of entropy's scheme than the lesser animals. With sufficient planning and preparation, we can limit entropy's impact on events. And bring forth more often the outcomes we desire, rather than those we fear. The course usually recommended for such times: Prior to initiating any large effort, we should determine first if a change really is necessary to the situation. Often it is not. We must take care not to be blinded by our own ambitions, or misperceptions of the moment. Too, if we misjudge the timing of change, we step off into an unseen abyss when we try to affect it. Part of proper timing depends on the extent of change that might reasonably be brought about by our efforts, and the readiness of the people around us to accept and aid us in such an endeavor. If there is an insufficient number of people amenable to change, our cause is lost before it is begun. We also cannot expect popular support if the gains promised by changes are small relative to benefits already derived from the status quo. To use a business example, product innovations which offer only a few percentage points of improvement over older models, at a significantly higher price to consumers, do not necessarily inspire success in the marketplace. Therefore your goal must be worthy of the cost. Else you will lack the support required for success.
Fixed (no changing lines);
This is a plateau process or event; the given model will hold true for an extended period of time. Attempts to manipulate events away from the present course could prove frustrating and fruitless, until destiny is satisfied. Consider the following as well as the above: The need for change is obvious, if not the way. Look to those around you for clues.
Changing Lines:
1
This is not the time for such changes. Have patience, or obstacles will arise to restrain your progress.
2
The wait is over. Begin your revolution.
3
Reckless actions bring misfortune, as well as wasted energies. Planning, forethought, and the support of others are essential to success.
4
You are inspiring others with your commitment that the corruption must end. Luck is with you.
5
The necessity of a cleansing revolution is obvious to everyone. Becoming a leader in the effort now will benefit all. As things reach their climax, be wary of unexpected betrayal by one or more of your most powerful allies. Remember that their goals in all this may be different from yours.
6
To attain maximum success in a revolution is like traveling to a faraway land; you must know when and where to stop. Otherwise you may find yourself in the end lost and in danger, overshooting your desired destination by some critical distance. Take your changes only as far as necessary to remove the corruption, and then stop to maintain your good fortune.
When all lines are changing;
Big changes, in anything, can be scary. They can also be difficult. Change just for the sake of change often will not work, or won't be worth the effort if it does. Make sure the change is desirable before pursuing it.
