Hexagram 34 Power
The model of the moment: Here is wielded great power for either good or ill in a situation. The application of this power should be virtuous and careful. Many could be harmed by its improper use. Great power brings with it great responsibility, and great risks. Even just use of great power can make enemies for the wielder. But unjust use makes far more, and can eventually result in a toppling from power for those who presently enjoy the heights of influence upon events. The course usually recommended for such times: Neither frivolity or an easily bruised ego are appropriate in one holding great power. Indeed, a critical element to the effective exercise of power can be the degree of detachment the wielder possesses from the outcome its use brings about. Persistence and the clarity of the goals involved can also be crucial. Power is best held in check under most circumstances. But in cases of crisis where prolonged conflict may mean disaster for all, it must often be used, or put at risk of seizure or nullification by the enemy. When application of power is necessary, do it decisively and efficiently. Strike overpoweringly at that held most dear by opponents. In such times, it is wrong to warn enemies beforehand of your strategies; surprise is often a essential element of power. Power is also best applied rapidly; the faster an event is concluded, the better. When opportunity appears, take it, so that none is left for your opponent. Do not waste your strength by striking where the enemy is strong, but rather where numbers are few and morale is low. Guide the retreat of opposing forces by leaving open a path of withdrawal. Pitting your own team against desperate forces with nothing left to lose will gain you nothing of value. Keep in mind that the utter destruction of the opposing forces is not your aim, but rather only their acquiescence to your authority. Anything else would bring about needless pain and destruction, and a loss of valuable resources needed for rebuilding after the conflict is resolved.
Fixed (no changing lines);
This is a plateau process or event; the given model will hold true for an extended period of time. Attempts to manipulate events away from the present course could prove frustrating and fruitless, until destiny is satisfied. Consider the following as well as the above: The risk here is tremendous. You must guide your strategies with all the wisdom you can muster. Otherwise your action will miss its mark, and you will be burdened with all the liabilities implied by failure.
Changing Lines:
1
Your very first actions have encountered resistance. You should refrain from further advance at this time.
2
The time has turned favorable.
3
There is danger in this situation. Subordinates are getting hurt.
4
Do not waste your efforts on the unattainable. Look instead for better alternatives.
5
What is gone is gone; forget it and attend to what remains to be gained.
6
You have been squeezed into a corner; your alternatives are few. Accept what you must to persevere.
When all lines are changing;
Take care to use your influence wisely. You could as easily harm the innocent as right the wrong.
