Hexagram 14 Independence
The model of the moment: To control one's own fate requires security from inevitable downturns, and preparation for unexpected setbacks. Otherwise the freedom of self-determination will be lost in such times. Security comes from appropriate reserves of goods or funds, set aside during periods of surplus. It also comes from the strengthening of long term social relationships with generosity when the times make it feasible. Those who forget or neglect such measures will lose both their freedom and the respect paid them by others, once the times turn hard again. Such insurance of freedom is appropriate for groups as well as individuals. True independence also requires non-commitment to any established ideology. It requires a curbing of personal passions. Passions are destabilizing influences, and tend to strengthen personal desires in a situation. This almost always worsens rather than improves conditions. The course usually recommended for such times: This may be a time of some sort of surplus, and so setting aside something significant for less pleasant days may be in order. If you are contemplating an abrupt departure from a present job, with high hopes for replacing the lost income easily from an entrepreneurial start up, you should think again. You may tempt financial disaster to become your partner. Many new businesses fail to make a profit for the first several years of their operation. Could you survive with a negligible salary over that time, child? Many successful entrepreneurs keep their traditional job during those precarious first few years, to avoid calamity. If you reach too far, too fast for total independence, you may find you've grasped instead its bitter opposite; financial ruin and a humiliating dependence on others.
Fixed (no changing lines);
This is a plateau process or event; the given model will hold true for an extended period of time. Attempts to manipulate events away from the present course could prove frustrating and fruitless, until destiny is satisfied. Consider the following as well as the above: You face a great challenge. One that few can meet adequately. Your thoughts, actions, and words must be free of selfishness, prejudice, and dogma. You must be completely and utterly objective in your decisions. Free of desire for excessive personal benefit. Focused on the benefit of all, and the long term welfare of your people. Those who are slaves to their ego could never accomplish these aims.
Changing Lines:
1
Riches are being produced and collected. The only dangers are arrogance and a lack of sensitivity towards others. This is the time to strengthen relationships, not weaken them. When bad times return ( and they will ) strong relationships could be your greatest wealth.
2
Don't gather and use more than you are due. Greed and excesses will stain your advance with criticism or worse.
3
Only inferior persons hoard wealth. Allowing accumulated riches to be used for the good of all brings advancement.
4
Spend your abundance conservatively and appropriately, and it will not be depleted.
5
Sincerity helps move others to help, but leadership is necessary for direction and to avoid waste of the resources collected.
6
You are blessed with success and respect here.
When all lines are changing;
You have achieved a significant measure of authority in the situation. This has thrust you into the attention of others. Take care not to allow your ego to lead you into embarrassing actions or words. Modesty would go far towards helping you to retain the new influence you wield.
